What is neurosurgery?

The word “neuro” refers to the nervous system which is made up of the brain, the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialisation of treating conditions of any part/s of the nervous system with surgery.

What is a neurosurgeon?

On completion of medical school, neurosurgeons undergo a further 5-7 years of training specialising in neurological diseases and neurosurgery.

Neurosurgical procedures in which neurosurgeons are trained include: keyhole neurosurgery for head injuries, MISS neurosurgery for brain tumors,  spinal fluid blockages, ruptured blood vessels in the brain, diseases of the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system.
